|
Our day school provides a Christian curriculum with individualised student programs and a mastery learning methodology for years K-12 on a scenic campus in Albany.
We understand that the choice of where to educate your child is a major decision. To help you decide we have listed a series of questions that you should ask before choosing a school for your child in Albany:
Does your program use a true Christian curriculum?
Australian Christian College - Southlands Answer:
Our program upholds the Bible and the Lordship of Christ in every subject. Biblical principles and character traits are woven into the curriculum.
How does your school ensure a safe environment for students?
Australian Christian College - Southlands Answer:
Our school has a strict behaviour policy which has zero tolerance for swearing, bullying and non-compliance. Students who consistently fail to meet these policies are asked to leave. All students are on six week behaviour probation when they join the school.
Does your school provide an individualised learning program for each student?
Australian Christian College - Southlands Answer:
Unlike most schools, each of our students work on a prescribed individualised learning program which takes into account their abilities and prior knowledge. This means their academic work is neither too hard nor too easy for them but at their correct level. Each student's program is different to every other student.
Does your school use a mastery based approach to learning?
Australian Christian College - Southlands Answer:
Our system requires a student gains a thorough understanding of a concept before they move onto more challenging material. Our program is on a continuum which continually revises material recently learned. In this way, with a requirement that understanding is achieved, students gain true mastery and do not end up with gaps in learning.
How many students are at the day school campus?
Australian Christian College - Southlands Answer:
Our day school population is small but growing with currently around 50 students. This means that students learn to mix socially with other students of different ages. The positive spirit of cooperation and encouragement between the older mature students and the younger ones is a feature that many parents comment positively upon.
Does your school use a complete and effective phonics based program?
Australian Christian College - Southlands Answer:
Our early reading program is phonics based and teaches a mastery of the 44 sounds of the English language. Students master this material before moving on to the first readers. Students who need extra revision are able to do so using our program.
Does your programme teach children "how" to learn?
Australian Christian College - Southlands Answer:
Life long learning skills such as goal setting, self-correction, and accountability are inherent in our instructional material. Rather than waiting or leaning on a teacher for explanations, our material is pitched at the level of the student whereby they are able to teach themselves. This prepares them well for doing their own research in the latter secondary years and beyond.
Does your curriculum cater for gifted students?
Australian Christian College - Southlands Answer:
We use a self paced curriculum where students proceed once they have mastered the material and are not left waiting for the rest of the class to catch up. One of our students graduated with a Year 12 certificate at age 11 years.
Is your program able to cater for students with learning difficulties or for those who have fallen behind academically?
Australian Christian College - Southlands Answer:
All new students start with diagnostic testing which enables us to identify any gaps in learning. Furthermore as our program is on a continuum and not tied into a school year like a normal lockstep classroom, students will start at exactly the level which is right for them in each subject.
Does the school have a Trade Training Centre?
Australian Christian College - Southlands Answer:
